The vibrant glow of the pandal began to dim as the festivities wound down, yet Shehnaaz's heart remained restless. The joyous laughter of her family faded into the background, replaced by the lingering mystery surrounding Uncle Lakhbir and the stranger. She stole glances toward them, her curiosity growing with each passing moment.
As the crowd began to disperse, Shehnaaz felt an urgency to confront Lakhbir. She shared a glance with Simmi, who was busy chatting with their mother, Pammi. It was now or never. With a determined stride, she made her way toward her uncle, who was now standing alone, the stranger nowhere in sight.
“Uncle Lakhbir,” Shehnaaz called softly, her voice barely rising above the hum of the retreating crowd. He turned, surprise etched on his face.
“Shehnaaz, my dear,” he replied, forcing a smile. “How was the pooja for you?”
“It was beautiful,” she replied, trying to keep her tone light. “But I couldn’t help but notice you were speaking with someone earlier. Is everything okay?”
Lakhbir’s expression shifted, a shadow crossing his features. “It’s nothing to worry about, really. Just some old business acquaintances catching up.”
“Old business?” Shehnaaz pressed, her instincts urging her to dig deeper. “You seemed... concerned.”
His eyes darted around, ensuring no one was listening. “It’s not the time or place to discuss this, Shehnaaz. Some things are better left unsaid, especially during a festival.”
“But I want to help, Uncle,” she insisted. “If something is bothering you, I can keep it a secret.”
He sighed, rubbing the back of his neck, a gesture Shehnaaz recognized as a sign of stress. “It’s complicated. There are family matters at play that you wouldn’t understand.”
“Try me,” she challenged, her resolve hardening. “I’m not a child anymore. I deserve to know.”
Before Lakhbir could respond, a familiar voice interrupted them. It was Shehbaaz, his demeanor light and carefree. “There you are, Shehnaaz! Come on, everyone’s heading to the food stalls. You don’t want to miss the jalebis!”
Shehnaaz glanced back at Lakhbir, who appeared relieved at the distraction. “I’ll be right there,” she said to her brother, who nodded and wandered off.
“Just promise me you’ll be careful,” Lakhbir said, his tone serious. “Some things are better left in the shadows.”
With that cryptic warning hanging in the air, Shehnaaz felt a chill run down her spine. What was her uncle hiding? But before she could press further, the allure of the food stalls beckoned her.
As the family gathered around the stalls, the sweet aroma of freshly made jalebis filled the air, momentarily lifting Shehnaaz’s spirits. She laughed and chatted with Simmi and Shehbaaz, but her thoughts kept drifting back to Lakhbir.
“Hey, are you okay?” Simmi asked, noticing her distant demeanor. “You’ve been quiet since we left the pandal.”
“Just tired, I guess,” Shehnaaz replied, forcing a smile. “Just a lot to take in today.”
Simmi raised an eyebrow, unconvinced. “Well, if you need to talk, I’m here.”
“Thanks, Simmi,” Shehnaaz said, appreciating her sister’s concern, but her mind was elsewhere. She couldn’t shake the feeling that something was brewing beneath the surface of their seemingly perfect family.
As they indulged in the sweet treats, Shehnaaz noticed a figure standing at the edge of the festival, partially obscured by shadows. It was the stranger she had seen with Lakhbir earlier. He was watching her intently, his expression unreadable. Heart pounding, she nudged Simmi. “Do you see that man over there?”
Simmi turned to look but found only a space where the figure had been. “What man?”
“I swear he was just there,” Shehnaaz insisted, but doubt began to creep in. Perhaps it was just her imagination, fueled by anxiety.
“Let’s get some more food!” Shehbaaz called, pulling her back into the moment.
As they returned to their family, laughter and chatter filled the air, but Shehnaaz’s mind was still racing. The festival continued around her, but she felt as if she were standing on the brink of something much larger than herself. The secrets of her family, the shadowy figure, and Lakhbir’s hidden worries loomed like dark clouds overhead.
As the night deepened, Shehnaaz knew that tomorrow would bring new challenges. With the festival behind them, she would have to confront the mysteries that shrouded her family. Little did she know, the answers she sought would lead her down a path she never anticipated, intertwining her fate with that of the stranger lurking in the shadows.
And so, with an uneasy heart, Shehnaaz braced herself for the unfolding of a new chapter in the Arora family saga, one that would reveal truths long buried and bonds that would be tested like never before.
